Premise: | Port of the phenomenal hit 1992 arcade racing game. |
Impressions: | There are two radically different yet interesting reviews of the Genesis
conversion of this game, as follows.... Like I'm going to pay ninety bucks for this? Yeah, sure. Can we say polygon-dropping? Hark! The Earth is not round - it is flat, and new land simply materializes in front of us. Cheat a little on our math, did we? I saw that Ferris wheel skew! Oh, yeah - that's 3D. Oh, and the sky showing through the ground in the overhead view - that was creative. I suppose it's no more creative than passing through solid objects, but I guess Sega needed to save that precious memory for the dithered color palette, or maybe the sound, or maybe the game control, or maybe NOTHING!.... (Salamander, Game Zero) I don't agree with Salamander...I have noticed very few of the problems he mentioned. The pop-up is pretty good, the game is fast, and you CERTAINLY CANNOT drive through things. I actually think it's a pretty good conversion, but I also agree it isn't worth the price tag. Recommended Emu: | No cart dump known to exist at this time. It is currently impossible to run this cart dump under an emulator. The original cart had an on-board Hitachi SH1 processor to handle the graphics, similar to the SH2 used in the 32X and the Saturn, and no current emulator supports this configuration. Many thanks to KGen 98 author Steve Snake for that little factoid, and a special thanks to the guys at the console emulation board over at Dave's Video Classics for raising the issue in the first place. I would like to thank Flavio for a box scan of the Brazillian MegaDrive release, which refers to the Hitachi as the "SVP chip" - that stands for Super Virtual Play, I believe. |
